An Air fryer and tortilla chips is a marriage made in heaven.
Using an air fryer for this recipe has many benefits: it cooks the chips faster than the oven, so you don’t have to wait as long for them to be done; it doesn’t require as much oil as other cooking methods; and unlike when using a deep fryer, no additional oil is required after they’ve been cooked. Store bought tortilla chips are usually deep fried so it is a lot healthier to prepare it at home (and it will only take you about 15 minutes)
Why you’ll love homemade tortilla chips made in an air fryer
You’ll love this recipe for a number of reasons:
Healthier – It is much healthier to air fry tortillas because you need much less oil and you can also control what kind of oil you use. I used avocado oil because it has the highest smoke point and it is refined. The higher the smoke point the healthier because there is a low chance the oil will contain carcinogens. Also store bought tortillas have a lot of additives and preservatives in them that is also unhealthy in the long term.
Fast and easy – You hardly need any equipment and it will take you about 15 minutes to prepare this delicious and healthy snack
Crispy and crunchy – Since the air fryer uses a high air circulated temperature it gives the tortillas a crispy and crunchy texture that you’ll love. Yummy!
Experiment with different seasonings – Another benefit is that with an air fryer you can make tortillas with different seasoning in one batch. I’ll show you my favorites below.
Ingredients
You’ll need these ingredients:
5 tortillas
1 teaspoon avocado oil
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon pepper
½ teaspoon garlic powder
Seasoning #1 – Spicy:
½ teaspoon paprika
½ teaspoon cumin
Seasoning #2 – Cheesy:
1 teaspoon nutritional yeast – This one’s my secret weapon. Since I became vegan my greatest battle was to stay away from cheese. That’s when I found nutritional yeast which is a great cheese alternative (didn’t believe it before I tried it) and it is also cheap and healthy.
Seasoning #3: Salt & Vinegar:
Just add some vinegar to your basic seasoning
Seasoning #4 – Taco
Add some taco seasoning to your batch of tortillas
I like to make at least 2 of these 4 seasonings when I make my air fryer tortillas. Usually I make them in different batches so the different flavors don’t get mixed up.
Dipping sauces
My go to dipping sauces for tortillas are usually guacamole and salsa.
Instructions
First, put your tortillas in one stack and cut your tortillas into 8 wedges. Mine were small and they made exactly 8 each. If you’re using bigger tortillas, you may end up with more chips per tortilla.
Next spray them with oil and add your preferred seasonings to it
Next add the wedges to your air fryer basket. Many people like to fry them in a single layer but I tried stacking them in a multi-layer fashion and to be honest they don’t really make a difference and it takes more time to bake them with the single layer method.
Also I don’t like to preheat my air fryer for this recipe. Using parchment paper or aluminium foil on the other hand is good idea because we have sprayed the tortilla chips with some oil and this way it will be easier for you to clean the basket. Important: Don’t use vinegar and aluminium foil together (more info on this here).
Cook at 400 degrees for 3-4 minutes. Then flip over the chips and cook for another 2-3 minutes until golden browned and crispy around the edges.
Equipment you’ll need
If you want to make your own tortilla chips, then you’re going to need a few items.
First and foremost, you’ll need an air fryer— If you haven’t found one yet be sure to check out our ultimate guide on how to choose an air fryer. I’d use an air fryer oven like the Kalorik Maxx because it has several racks where you can fry the chips
You’ll also need a cutting board and knife for slicing your tortillas into triangles before putting them in the air fryer.
Additionally you’ll need a bowl and spatula; these will be useful for mixing up your dipping sauces or dressing while the chips are cooking!
Frequently asked questions
Q: What’s the best kind of tortilla to use?
A: There are two main options for tortillas here; corn and flour. Corn will give a traditional flavor, with a sweet and nutty taste. If its 100% made from corn flour than it is also gluten-free. Flour gives a lighter, more neutral flavor.
If you’re dipping your chips, corn will give a bit more crunch than flour. But if you prefer not to fry your chips at all—or just don’t have the time—flour will work better because it won’t get rubbery when baked in the oven.
Q: What if I don’t have an air fryer? Can I still make these tortilla chips?
A: Yes! In fact, there are two ways you can go about this. You could bake them in the oven or bake them on the stovetop (but only if you have an induction stove). But I love to make them in an air fryer because it’s a lot faster and you don’t need attention while making them. You just need to shake the basket at half time and that’s it. Q: What can I dip my air fryer tortilla chips in
My favorite is guacamole and salsa because they are vegan and still delicious. You can use sour cream dip too for some creamy feeling added to the crunchiness.
Q: Can I make these tortilla chips gluten-free
Yes you can! Using corn tortilla made of 100% corn flour is a gluten-free version
Q: Can I make these tortilla chips vegan
Absolutely! Actually this recipe is 100% vegan and 100% delicious!
